Project manager wet-lab R and D – transcriptome analysis

Description and goal of the function

The project manager wet lab research and development coordinates internal R&D and customer projects in the frame of transcriptome analysis. The project manager oversees all necessary steps and resources in order to assure high quality results for new workflows being optimized or for customized customer projects.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Plan, coordinate and interpret wet-lab activities for
    • internal research to bring Biogazelle’s gene expression service offering to a higher level
    • customer service projects with a major research component, e.g. because of untested gene expression workflows
  • Supporting colleagues on feasibility of specific non-routine customer requests
  • Supporting colleagues on design of experiment set up and on pricing of customized projects
  • Decides on the required resources (personnel, infrastructure, instrument platforms, reagent and consumables) to assure the technical competence to execute the projects; s/he reports this to the lab manager or lab manager assistant
  • Takes full responsibility from A to Z on the assigned projects: from experiment design to briefing lab technicians and data-analysts, installing the needed quality control mechanisms, interpreting results, assuring traceability of all data and results along the entire project, making the final report and communicating this to the head of wet lab R&D or the customer
  • During the execution of the service project, the project manager will do the communication with the customer and performs the contract review
    • Responsible for the evaluation of the customer feedback
    • S/he will actively contribute to maintaining all quality standards in order to safeguard the quality label ISO17025.
  • Support head of wet lab R&D and chief scientific officer in planning and coordination of wet-lab research activities
  • Actively look for novel kits or procedures that may complement Biogazelle’s service offering or yield better data quality, or that reduce cost by lower reagent cost or decreased hands on time
  • Guide, collaborate with and support lab technicians in executing novel lab activities
  • Communicate well with data-analysts in processing and mining data from R&D projects
  • Support transition from research activities to well understood and documented procedures for ISO17025 environment, including technical validation of newly introduced procedures for the wet-lab
  • Keep knowledge up to date by reading scientific literature and going to conferences or workshops

Competences and skills

  • A master degree in biotechnology, biomedical sciences, bio-engineering or related scientific field
  • Good knowledge about next generation sequencing workflows
  • A strong affinity to molecular biology techniques with experience in RNA work and gene expression analysis, preferentially including RNA-sequencing
  • At least 3 years of solid experience in gene expression research
  • Knowledge of general lab techniques; basic knowledge of data analysis and bio-informatics
  • Research minded (why and how does something work or not)
  • Project management and planning skills
  • Critically and analytically review experimental outcomes, make suggestions for follow-up experiments
  • Able to work in team and individually
  • Willing to develop or having developed customer empathy
  • Documented experience with introducing new or optimizing existing lab methods is a strong asset
