Pine Biotech is launching an online educational portal with practical project-based education resources in collaboration with the University of Haifa’s Tauber Bioinformatics Research Center. After piloting the T-BioInfo bioinformatics platform as a research tool, the company focused on developing online resources to help make bioinformatics more accessible for biologists, clinicians and educators. As a critical component of precision medicine, bioinformatics has been a challenging subject with only 25% of the programs offering basic data stewardship skills (M.D. Brazas et al, Nature, 2017). Limiting factors for the integration of bioinformatics practice-oriented courses into curriculum include the lack of qualified trainers experienced in the subject, cost of computational resources and infrastructure maintenance, and standard pre-requirement of coding competencies. One can consider the challenges of learning about Next Generation Sequencing data analysis (for example, RNA-seq). The Wikipedia compilation of RNA-seq bioinformatics tools has a list of 17 sections and over 52 pages long (estimate provided by https://wordcounter.io). T-BioInfo is a research platform that can also be used for education (https://t-bio.info). In combination with online educational modules (edu.t-bio.info), this platform is a solution that overcomes these limitations providing theoretical background and hands-on experience in a project-oriented educational environment.
