Researchers from Southern Medical University have developed an innovative tool called the SMART-RNA-Metavirome platform that enhances scientists’ ability to detect and analyze RNA viruses in complex samples. RNA viruses, such as dengue, Zika, and Japanese encephalitis viruses, are often difficult to identify when present in low quantities, especially in samples from mosquitoes or patient blood. Traditional sequencing methods can miss these low-abundance viruses, limiting early detection and disease monitoring.

The new SMART-RNA-Metavirome approach improves how viral RNA is captured and prepared for sequencing. It integrates short-read (Illumina) and long-read (Nanopore) sequencing technologies, allowing researchers to reconstruct complete viral genomes with exceptional sensitivity. The platform proved highly effective in identifying viruses even in mosquito samples with very low viral loads, showing nearly perfect correlation with RT-qPCR results.

Because it works with both next-generation and third-generation sequencing, this method provides a powerful tool for tracking emerging infections, studying viral diversity, and improving public health surveillance. By enabling precise identification of both known and unknown viruses, SMART-RNA-Metavirome helps researchers stay ahead in the fight against mosquito-borne and other RNA virus outbreaks.
